Maths

At Greenleas, we understand how mathematical knowledge and understanding is essential to everyday life and therefore considerable importance is attached to our children achieving and understanding mathematical processes, concepts and skills.  An enthusiastic attitude to maths is promoted by providing a high quality mathematical education, which is presented in an interesting and enjoyable way using a variety of teaching methods.  This encourages the children to actively and confidently participate in the learning process and enables them to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of:  number, measurement, geometry and statistics.  There is a strong emphasis on the development of mental arithmetic, and giving opportunities for the pupils to use and apply their skills and knowledge to the world around them.  Each classroom is equipped with a maths help desk, where children are encouraged to help themselves to resources to independently access the curriculum and solve problems.

Aims

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Maths is taught through a daily 1 hour maths lesson which follows the principles of the New Maths Curriculum 2014. The teaching of maths skills, however, is not solely restricted to the maths lesson, as class teachers also plan for opportunities to develop and apply key mathematical skills in other subjects throughout the year.  Problem solving, mental fluency and reasoning skills are taught regularly across all year groups.

We follow the White Rose Hub long term planning, but have made amendmends to suit our children.  In our overview we have also highlighted areas where we feel key mathematical skills can be re-visited and consolidated.
