Whilst homework is not compulsory in Key Stage 1, we would encourage you to support your child in completing any homework sent home. The homework sent home is further practice of the objectives taught during the week in your child's lessons.
Homework will be issued weekly for Numeracy and Literacy/Phonics and is sent out on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday.

The children read in a variety of ways e.g. shared reading, guided reading groups, phonics lessons, reading for pleasure, collaborative reading etc.

On our ‘Useful Information for Parents’ page you can find out about reading expectations in KS1 and there are support aids that you can use at home.

Guided reading session’s support children develop specific reading skills based on their ability. The teacher uses prior knowledge and year group expectations to plan for these sessions.

The children will bring home the guided reading book that they have read in school. This means they will have already started this book, should be familiar with it and adult comments will identify focus and next steps.

We are very grateful for the time you take to read with your children at home and this without a doubt impacts on their progress. We ask that you fill in any parent comments about how your child has got on and return the reading record and books by Tuesday at the latest as our guided reading sessions will take place on Wednesday.

Phonics and Spellings

In KS1 we use Letters and Sounds and Jolly Phonics to teach phonics (continued from F2). Please see our Useful Information for Parents page for more information about Jolly Phonics.

We also will be following a new programme to teach spelling called 'No Nonsense Spelling.' The programme states:

‘Learning needs to happen in school and at home as there is a high expectation within the new National Curriculum that pupils will learn many increasingly complex words.’

To enable deeper learning we will be sending 5 new spellings a week and the children will be tested slightly differently. Instead of a formal test, children will be assessed in context, for example: learning spellings in a given sentence, generating sentences for each word, assessing through unseen dictated sentences.

Once the word has been learnt it will be added to our phonics wall so children correctly spell the word in their independent writing.

Within phonics sessions a range of strategies for learning spellings are introduced and practiced. This enables pupils to choose the strategies they find most effective for learning different words.

The learning strategies can be found on the 'Useful Information for Parents' Page.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s teachers.
