Our Vision

The governors and staff of Greenleas Primary School work together to provide high quality care and education for all our children. We strive for high achievement in all that we do.

We want our children to be confident, motivated, independent learners with a healthy self-image and respect for others.

We are an inclusive school where every member of the Greenleas ‘family’ is valued and cared for.

Our Mission

We aim to provide an environment:

    We aim to provide a rich and balanced curriculum which:

  • develops spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness and understanding.

    We want our children to be able to:

    Our Core Values

    Promoting and teaching a set of school core values to our children will educate them to become confident, responsible and caring citizens.

    These values are embedded into the curriculum and Teaching and Learning in order to develop social and emotional skills and encourage the children to follow our 3 school rules-

    We value respect

    We treat everyone as we would like to be treated. We work together in tolerance, understanding and respect to create a happy school. We celebrate differences and similarities and embrace the diversity of our community.

    We value responsibility

    We are responsible for our words, actions and attitude. We can be trusted to do what is right and make good choices. We all have a responsibility to make our world a better place. By working together, as a team, we achieve this. 

    We value cooperation

    We work happily together as a team, encouraging everyone’s skills, abilities and interests. We know we can achieve much more when we cooperate with others

    We value perseverance

    We work hard to achieve the best we can in everything we do, even when it is difficult. We are not afraid to ask for help when we need it.

    We value friendship

    From the oldest to the youngest, we work hard to be a good friend. We try our best to make our school a happy place to be. We work and play together well, encouraging and celebrating everyone’s skills, abilities and interests.

    We value honesty

    We try to be honest in all that we say and do. We know it is important to be truthful and accept responsibility if we have done something wrong.

Promoting British Values at Greenleas Primary School

The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated by the Prime Minister in 2014. At Greenleas these values are promoted regularly and in the following ways:

Democracy

How citizens can influence decision making through the democratic process

Democracy is embedded within the school. Children have the opportunity to have their voices heard through:

  • School Council
  • Eco Council
  • Pupil Questionnaires
  • Regular ‘pupil voice’ events, including nominating children for awards e.g. POOC, Kindness
  • Debates

The elections of School and Eco Council and various other roles in school are based on the children’s votes.

Our school behaviour policy involves rewards which the children vote on as a class group.

The children show responsibility for elements of school life.

They become the voice of the children.

All children have the opportunity to share their opinions.

Makes the children confident to share their ideas and the ability to listen.

The Rule of Law

An appreciation that living under the rules of law protects individual citizens

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout the regular school day, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school assemblies.

Children are taught from an early age the rules of the school. They are taught the value and reasons behind laws or rules, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken- school rules, playground rules, e-safety rules etc…

Visits from authorities such as the Police and Fire Services are regular parts of our school calendar and help reinforce this message.

PSHE lessons include topics such as SRE, drugs education, healthy eating and anti-bullying and along with trips to for example, Y5 Pupil Court at Calday, messages are further reinforced.

Children become knowledgeable and learn about consequences.

They are able to articulate how and why we need to behave in school and demonstrate they understand and abide by this.

Children find out about roles and responsibilities in the community and the consequences of Law

Individual Liberty- an understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law.

An acceptance that other people having differing faiths and beliefs or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young children to make choices safely, through provision of a safe environment, assemblies and parent workshops.

Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised on how to exercise these safely, for example through E-Safety, Digital Citizen blogs and PSHE lessons, as well as through our Forest School sessions.

Pupils are given the freedom to make choices e.g participating in after-school clubs, choosing the level of challenge in some lessons, organising the recording of their work, planning class assemblies and presentations.

Children understand the importance of accepting responsibility and their right to be heard in school

Children take an active role in all aspects of school life.

Mutual Respect

An understanding in our children that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around values such as respect and inclusion. Children are part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. Children are encouraged to listen to each other, to respect each other and understand their rights and responsibilities. This is achieved through:

  • RE lessons
  • Cross curricular topics e.g. Y5/6 Festivals of Faith
  • F2/Y6 Buddy link
  • National and local charity fundraising led by the children
  • Themed weeks – e.g. Anti-bullying week
  • Assemblies led by the children.

This is reiterated through our classroom and school rules, as well as our behaviour policy.

Additionally assemblies (whole school, key stage and class) complement and promote British Values with themes such as remembrance as well as stories and celebrations from world religions.

Children can articulate why respect is important; how to show respect to others and how they feel about it themselves.

Children’s behaviour demonstrates their understanding.

Children are able to talk about different faiths and cultures; they ask questions and show tolerance and respect of different faiths and religions.

Tolerance of those of different Faiths and Beliefs

An understanding of the problems of identifying and combating discrimination

This is achieved through enhancing pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity in our local community.

Our RE curriculum is based on the locally agreed syllabus and enables children to learn about the customs, practices and celebrations of the world’s main faiths and see the similarities and differences between them. We provide opportunities for the children to visit places of significant cultural interest, places of worship and we actively encourage visitors from a range of communities and organisations into school to give them a better understanding of a different belief system which may not be practiced in our local community but which is significant in the Merseyside area. Examples include:

  • A visit from a Buddhist Monk
  • Visits to places of worship
  • Regular assemblies and visits from the local church community

Other opportunities to learn about different lives and cultures are provided through our creative curriculum current events such as the WW1 centenary and major sporting events.

Children are able to talk about different faiths and cultures; they ask questions and show tolerance and respect of different faiths and religions.
